Naming Convention

Once diagnosed, the oncologist will attempt to determine the size and extent of the tumor. This is called staging. Stages usually range from 0 to 4 – generally, stages 1 and 2 are confined near the original site, stage 3 indicates the cancer has moved to nearby sites, and stage 4 indicates spread to distant lymph nodes or organs. This staging system is not used for all cancers, however. Some cancers may be classified only as localized or disseminated.
