Making the decision to be a family caregiver is not one that you should take lightly. This is a choice that will not just impact you in your life right now, but will also impact your relationships, your plans, and your future. Throughout your care experience you may find that your responsibilities and tasks for your aging parent become the primary focus of your life, and you may even begin to shape your identity around your role as a caregiver. While this can help you to focus all of the care and attention on your parent that they need, it can also diminish the rest of your life. Though it is not something that you want to think about, it is important that you consider what will happen in your life when you are no longer a caregiver.

The time will come when your caregiver journey comes to an end. This is not something that you want to think about or that you enjoy pondering, but it is something that you need to keep in mind in order to ensure that you preserve your own identity and quality of life throughout your care experience with your aging parent. This will not only help protect you, but will allow you to focus more of your attention and energy on your loved one during your care journey knowing that you are ready when it comes time to move to the next chapter in your life.

Use these tips to help you plan for when you are no longer a caregiver:

  • Safeguard your relationships. Do not let so much of your focus and energy go to your parent that you disregard the other relationships in your life. Be sure to continue to support and nurture your marriage, your friendships, and your relationships with your children. This will not only give you greater strength and emotional health during your care journey, but it will also help to ensure that those relationships are there when your care comes to an end.
  • Have a goal. Having a goal for your life is a fantastic way to provide structure and meaning even as you are going through the transition out of your care relationship. It is easy to feel as though your life no longer has a clear purpose or that you are just going through the motions after you stop caring for your parent. Having a goal of something that you want to do or accomplish will give you that clear purpose so that you can continue moving forward.
  • Stay connected to yourself. While you are caring for your parent, do not let your own identity disappear. Even though you are spending much of your time caring for your loved one and will not have as much time to yourself, you can still focus on maintaining your personality and individuality. Remember to do things that will keep you “you” during your care experience. Even things as simple as wearing your favorite color, continuing to wear makeup, or staying in touch with a special club or organization will carry you through as your relationship comes to an end.
