Keep Engaged with Dad when He Hires Home Care Services

Home Care Services in Schnecksville PA

It may have taken a while to convince your elderly father to consider hiring home care services. You did your homework, researched the various services they can offer, and even found out some information about things they do to support seniors within the comfort of their home.

At first, you might’ve been providing the type of care he needed at home, not realizing the benefits of professional caregivers. Or perhaps you felt it was your responsibility to be there for him after the hospitalization because you live relatively close to him. Maybe a family member tried to make you feel guilty for even considering encouraging him to hire a professional caregiver. After all, it can be easy to place that responsibility on somebody else’s shoulders.

No matter why he finally agreed to hire professional home care, it’s important to stay engaged with him, even though you may feel a great deal of relief that somebody else will be supporting him.  There are a number of ways you can maintain a healthy relationship with your father:

Call to talk to him on a regular basis. Your father may feel isolated and alone, especially if he has limited mobility and can’t get around very well. He may not be able to spend time with friends like he used to, even though this new caregiver might be able to drive him to visit with friends.  Just picking up the phone and talking to him every day or every few days can provide him that personal connection he might be craving.

Spend at least one day every couple of weeks with him. If you have the opportunity and don’t live too far away, you may want to consider spending a day or an afternoon doing something with him outside the house. Take him to the park, go to a movie, check out a museum or other show. Whatever it is, this will give him something to look forward to for the next visit.

Encourage his friends to visit. If your father can’t get to see them, contact his friends and encourage them to stay in contact with him and visit with him on a regular basis. This can help lift his spirits and that can be incredibly important for improving overall quality of life and emotional health and well-being. It’s great that he relies on home care services now, but it is still just as important that you and other family members stay engaged in his life on a regular basis.
