Whether you live near your senior or you live far away, you might need to start paying closer attention to some details about her life. These details can help you to act more quickly when she needs some more help and how you might be able to offer that help.
Is She Still Engaging in Hobbies She Loves?
One way to try to gauge how your elderly family member is really doing is by noticing what she’s up to lately. Is she not doing much, especially if she had a lot of hobbies in the past? Ask her about some of the hobbies that you know she used to enjoy. If she mentions that it’s been a while since she did anything with those interests, talk to her about why she’s not as involved with those things.
Is She Talking about Friends and Acquaintances?
Listen to how your senior talks, lately, too. Is she mentioning acquaintances and friends to the same degree as she used to? If your elderly family member isn’t talking to friends as often, there may be a reason. She could be isolating a bit more than you realize. Isolation is dangerous because it can lead to depression and other mental and physical health issues, as well.
Have Her Activity Levels Changed?
Beyond her interests in general, how is your senior’s activity level? If she’s not seeming to be up and about as much as usual, even when she’s just at home, there may be a reason for that. It may be a good idea to talk to your elderly family member about what she’s experiencing and whether she’s limiting her activity levels for a specific reason.
Does She Have an Emergency Plan and Access to Other Resources?
Emergency plans are a crucial part of any safety plan for your senior, but it’s important to double check those periodically. Make sure your elderly family member has a plan and that she’s updated it recently. What other resources or tools does your senior need? Now might be the time to talk to her about home care providers, particularly if she has expressed that she’s having some difficulty keeping up with some of life’s demands.
Finding out what your senior actually needs is a key part of being her caregiver. This allows you to put the right solutions in place to get her precisely what is going to help her the most.
