Summer is still going strong, which means that you may still be thinking about that last vacation to round out the warmer months of the season. Perhaps you are already looking ahead to the fall and winter seasons when you may travel with your aging parent for holiday travels.  Whatever the reason you are considering traveling, if you are going a long distance you are probably considering flying. While this is the fastest and easiest means of getting long distances, it can seem daunting if you are traveling with an aging adult who has needs and challenges. Fortunately there are simple decisions that you can make prior to the trip that will make air travel less stressful and more approachable for your senior and for you.

Some of these simple decisions that you can make include:

  • Choose accessible seats. Most airlines allow you to choose your seats ahead of time when you book far enough in advance. Look for seats that are accessible and will be more comfortable for your parent. The seats at the very front of the plane and the seats at the far back are generally the ones that have the most legroom. Those at the front will be easiest and fastest to get to and to get out of when you arrive at your destination. If your parent copes with mobility issues, incontinence, digestive problems, or other personal issues, however, they may prefer to sit in the back closer to the restrooms.
  • Choose direct flights. It is often more expensive to fly directly rather than having connecting flights, but it is much simpler and less stressful for your aging parent. When you have a direct flight you only need to worry about boarding, taking off, and landing once. This process is also usually far faster than flights with stops as well.
  • Contact the airline. Get in touch with the airline ahead of time to find out about any special accommodations that they can make for your parent. They may be able to arrange for a wheelchair or scooter to make transferring to the gate faster and easier, or allow for early boarding to simplify getting settled in. If your parent needs medical equipment or medication during the time that you will be on the flight, make arrangements with the airline to ensure they pass through security and are accepted on the plane.
  • Bring along help. Traveling is almost always at least somewhat stressful. This is especially true if you are traveling with your aging parent. If you are also traveling with children, the situation is even more stressful. Make this process easier on yourself by hiring a home care provider to come with you. This in home senior care services provider can provide direct assistance and support that ensures your parent is safe and healthy throughout the flight. This permits you to focus on your own travel needs and those of your children while also feeling confident that your parent’s travel experience is under control.
