Is Telemarketing Annoying your Senior Parent?

Elder Care in Monroeville, PA – Is Telemarketing Annoying your Senior Parent?

Telemarketing has become very popular these days. It’s a cheap and effective way to reach the targeted audience through a phone call; however, this can sometimes be very annoying as one person may receive several calls a day. There are some ways in which people can prevent this.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) can stop the unwanted calls you may receive.  The “Do Not Call” registry is an effective way to fight off solicitors.  This registry was created to help the people who are being bothered by telemarketers or other unwanted calls. Although this can be effective, a person may still occasionally receive a call from a charity organization or telephone surveyors.

How Seniors can Avoid Telemarketing Scams

If your elderly parent is still receiving too many unwanted calls they can:

·        Verify their number is in the registry. There are two ways in which they can do this. One is online at donotcall.gov, where they should click on “Verify a Registration”. Upon doing this, they will receive an email from the FTC. It is necessary for them to click on this email within 72 hours after receiving it. If they skip this step, the number will not be verified and the unwanted calls may continue.

·        If your elderly parent does not have the access to the internet, they should try calling the number 888-328-1222 from the phone number they wish to verify. In case that the number is not in the registry, it should be added automatically after this call.

·        Some unwanted calls may occur during this time and when that happens, your parent needs to call and complain to the FTC. They will need to provide the commission with the exact time when the call happened and the name of the company that did it.

There are a lot of scammers finding different ways to take money from people, and they usually target the elderly population. This is why it is really important to inform your senior parent about these types of scams. If you are still worried about your parent, you can hire professional help from a caregiver. They are accustomed to dealing with many types of situations affecting seniors. Hired elderly home care is good for everyday tasks like meal planning, driving your senior around, organizing medications, and more. If you want your parent to have a trusted companion and helper, a caregiver is a good choice.
